eclipse

A sequence of images taken about every 20 minutes show the Feb. 20 lunar eclipse as seen from Toronto. A total lunar eclipse can only occur during a full moon, when the moon passes through the shadow of the Earth. The next total lunar eclipse visible from North America will not occur until Dec. 21, 2010.

{March 2, 2008}   Lincoln Letters Online

20080117104309990011.gif20080117103409990003.gif

Barely a year into the Civil War, President Abraham Lincoln suggested buying slaves for $400 apiece under a “gradual emancipation” plan that would bring peace at less cost than several months of hostilities.

The proposal was outlined in one of 72 letters penned by Lincoln that ended up in the University of Rochester’s archives. The correspondence was digitally scanned and posted online along with easier-to-read transcriptions.

Accompanying them are 215 letters sent to Lincoln by dozens of fellow political and military leaders. They include letters from Vice President Andrew Johnson and Gen. Ulysses S. Grant, who both succeeded Lincoln in the presidency in the 12 years after his assassination in 1865.

In a letter to Illinois Sen. James A. McDougall dated March 14, 1862, Lincoln laid out the estimated cost to the nation’s coffers of his “emancipation with compensation” proposal. Paying slave-holders $400 for each of the 1,798 slaves in Delaware listed in the 1860 Census, he wrote, would come to $719,200 at a time when the war was soaking up $2 million a day.

Buying the freedom of an estimated 432,622 slaves in Delaware, Maryland, Kentucky, Missouri and Washington, D.C., would cost $173,048,800 – nearly equal to the estimated $174 million needed to wage war for 87 days, he added.

Lincoln suggested that each of the states, in return for payment, might set something like a 20-year deadline for abolishing slavery.

The payout “would not be half as onerous as would be an equal sum, raised now, for the indefinite prosecution of the war,” he told McDougall.

The idea never took root. Six months later, Lincoln issued the first of two executive orders known as the Emancipation Proclamation that declared an end to slavery. The 13th Amendment to the Constitution was ratified after the collapse of the confederacy, ending two centuries of bondage in North America.

“To be given a document that plunks you right into a situation that Lincoln was facing, it’s very compelling,” said Brian Fleming, a University of Rochester librarian who is heading the online project which debuted Feb. 18 – Presidents Day.

The Lincoln letters addressing the war, slavery and other affairs of state, are part of a collection of papers once belonging to his Secretary of State, William H. Seward Sr.

They were bequeathed by Seward’s grandson, William Henry Seward III, who lived in Auburn, 70 miles east of Rochester, and arrived at the University of Rochester between 1949 and 1987.

The digitally scanned letters appear on the school library’s Web site along with transcriptions, contextual essays written by graduate students and lesson plans designed to help teachers.

{March 2, 2008}   Insomnia is Normal

insomnia1.jpg

It’s 4:17 P.M. Central time and I just woke up.

I feel so tired sleeping. My back hurts.

They say that you’ll feel rested and relaxed after sleeping – NOT!!!
I guess it’s because of too much sleep. And I remember, everything that is taken in excess is not good.
Sleeping at 6 A.M. and waking up at 4:17 P.M. – that means I had 10 hours of sleep – is that excessive?
Dozing off is better that doing nothing besides I have sleep problems – others call it insomnia. I call it normal.

What if I really can’t sleep at night? What if even with the help of sleep aids I can’t fall asleep? What if this is normal for me? What if daytime is sleeptime for me and nightime is my real time? Isn’t that normal, too?

I am a nocturnal creature. I love the night. I love the quiet and peaceful sound and feel of the night. While all others are sleeping, the world is mine. While all the others are dreaming, I am facing reality.

According to medterms.com, Insomnia: The perception or complaint of inadequate or poor-quality sleep because of one or more of the following: difficulty falling asleep; waking up frequently during the night with difficulty returning to sleep; waking up too early in the morning; or unrefreshing sleep. Insomnia is not defined by the number of hours of sleep a person gets or how long it takes to fall asleep. Individuals vary normally in their need for, and their satisfaction with, sleep. Insomnia may cause problems during the day, such as tiredness, a lack of energy, difficulty concentrating, and irritability.

Also, according to that website, the causes of insomnia include advanced age – insomnia occurs more frequently in those age over 60. It is also more prevalent in the female gender. It is also caused by a history of depression. In other conditions such as stress, anxiety, a medical problem, or the use of certain medications, insomnia is more likely.

There are many causes of insomnia. Transient and intermittent insomnia generally occur in people who are temporarily experiencing one or more of the following: stress, environmental noise, extreme temperatures, a change in the surrounding environment, sleep/wake schedule problems such as those due to jet lag, or medication side effectsI do not have insomnia – or that’s what I believe. First, I have adequate sleep – 10 hours everyday. I do not have difficulty falling asleep. I just chose to be awake and do stuff at night. There are a lot of things I can do at night. I can write, read and watch my favorite anime shows without anybody disturbing me. Nightime is the best time to contemplate and meditate. How can I have insomnia if I’m not over the age of 60? I do not have a history of depression and I am not stressed. I do not even have a medical condition and I do not have regular medications not unless you call Ferrous Sulfate a regular medication. I am not under stress, my environment is so peaceful and the temperature here in Texas is splendid. No jetlags either. The last time I got on the plane was last January 4, 2008 when my boyfriend and I moved here from California. Will that cause me insomnia?

Oh well, insomnia or not, I believe that sleeping during the day and being awake at night is not a disease. Sleeping is a choice. Choosing to sleep at daytime is normal. It’s not insomnia. It’s a choice. It is normal. I am normal.

{March 2, 2008}   Come What May

moulinrougecomewhatmay.jpg

” Never knew I could feel like this
Like I’ve never seen the sky before
Want to vanish inside your kiss
Every day I love you more and more
Listen to my heart, can you hear it sing?
Telling me to give you everything
Seasons may change, winter to spring
But I love you until the end of time
Come what may
Come what may
I will love you until my dying day”
— Come What May, Moulin Rogue

I am listening to this song right now. Is there such thing as loving till the end of time? Is there such thing as loving till one’s dying day?
It’s one of the greatest song about love and loving.
If there’s such thing as this, I would bet on it.
I am in a relationship right now. I am happy and contented.
I am not a pessimist but I do not believe in forever coz there is no forever. Everything will end one way or another – in it’s perfect time.
My honey always tells me that he will love me forever and until the day he dies. I believe him eventhough I don’t believe in forever. I will just have to see this myself. I will have to prove myself wrong that there’s no forever.

“And there’s no mountain too high
No river too wide
Sing out this song, and I’ll be there by your side
Storm clouds may gather,
And stars may collide(Christian/Satine:)
But I love you (I love you)
Until the end of time (until the end of time)”

{March 2, 2008}   Ennui
ennui.jpg
Ennui on-WEE, noun: A feeling of weariness and dissatisfaction arising from lack of interest; boredom.

Seven hours. I had seven hours of sleep. It was a short one compared to the other days I slept. Weird thing is, I know I can still sleep because I’m still tired. Why am I so tired after seven hours of sleep?

I didn’t immediately went down to grab some food. I stayed in the room and checked emails and read blogs, essays, news, etc. I also was able to chat with my friends.

CK, one of my friends is having a problem with his girlfriend. He said he thinks his gf is taking her for granted and do not appreciate him. He said that he prepared a 3-day vacation for the two of them; even asked her parents for permission; to him everything was set. Then his gf said, “I won’t be able to login at MTC.” MTC is one of the adult forums we have. I am also a member of this community but I don’t think like CK’s girlfriend. Their relationship started in MTC. It doesn’t have to be MTC-based. It seems that the girl is more interested in MTC than in their time alone together. I advised my friend that he must make a stand. It’s not the first time that he was treated like trash by his gf. I even advised CK that he must not be blind with regards to their relationship. It’s a relationship because there are people involved, participating and working for it. If he is the only one sacrificing and working for the good of their relationship, it’s as good as no relationship. CK decided that he will give the gf one more chance. I just hope he’ll be firm in his decision this time… not be persuaded and blinded. Martyrs are so passe.

Garry, a photographer-friend of mine was also online so we were able to talk a little. He was at his office and will be out in 30 minutes but we still managed to exchange news. He said that there have been a lot of changes that happened since the last time we’ve talked. He already broke up with his 3-year girlfriend – third party. His gf found a new man and chose to be with the other guy. Garry did not asked his gf stay and choose him. He said there was no point. If a girl decides to be with another guy, a man has to let go. After some months, he said, the ex-gf was asking if she and Garry can be together again. She said she was wrong, that she was sorry and realized that she loves Garry more. Garry laughed at his ex-gf. He did not accept her back. I told him that it was a good decision. For me, once a person strays away, even once, that person can stray away again. Garry believes that, too. So now, Garry is without a girlfriend but is dating. I advised him to take his time.

After chatting with my friends, I decided to go down and look for something to eat. I found nothing. There are a lot of food in the fridge but I still have to cook. I decided to eat dingdongs. Then, I decided to cook “menudo.”

My boyfriend came home from work while I was still cooking. I had him go to Walgreens and get some stuff. When he came back, we ate. Then we decided to go out and buy chocolates since it was a day after Valentine’s day and chocolates are on sale. When we arrived at Walmart, there was no chocolate from Valentine’s day on-sale. We decided to check out Walgreens. Everything from Valentine’s (Chocolates) were sold. We decided to buy chocolates which are not on sale because I was craving for chocolates.

When we got home, I took a shower and decided to write. That is what I am doing right now while my boyfriend is taking a shower.

I have done a lot of things today but still I’m bored.  I am feeling ennui.
